The Times-Union's investigation into Sunshine Law abuses by the Jacksonville City Council won two Green Eyeshade Awards on Saturday in a competition among newspapers from 11 Southeastern states.

The Society of Professional Journalists honored reporter Beth Kormanik and editorial writer Joe Adams with second place in the public affairs reporting category for their probe into City Council open government practices. Their work resulted in a grand jury investigation and Florida's first-known local ordinance to ensure better compliance with the state's open meetings law.

Adams' editorials on council Sunshine practices resulting from his year of public records research also won a third place in the 58th annual awards, which were announced in Atlanta at a banquet.

The 2008 awards recognized outstanding journalism from last year by journalists in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.

In addition, Adams recently earned a third place in editorial writing in The National Headliner Awards for his opinion pieces about the City Council Sunshine Law problems and Duval County's state leading murder rate. The awards, originating in 1935 and sponsored by The Press Club of Atlantic City, N.J., are among the oldest and largest journalism contests in the nation.
