Montgomery lefty Price on fast track

The Jacksonville Suns won’t meet the Montgomery Biscuits again until a five-game series at the Baseball Grounds Aug. 12-16. By then, David Price, the No. 1 pick in the 2007 college draft by the Tampa Bay Rays, could be with the big-league club.
Price is a perfect 8-0 this season (4-0 with Vero Beach in Class A, 4-0 with Montgomery) although the Biscuits had to rally late in a 5-3 win over Birmingham on Thursday after Price gave up three solo home runs in five innings.
Last Sunday, baseball analyst Buster Olney on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight predicted that Price would make an impact in the American League pennant race as soon as Tampa Bay brings the left-hander up to the major-league roster. Biscuits manager Billy Gardner Jr. echoed those sentiments.
“I don’t know what the future holds for him,” Gardner told the Birmingham News. “David has that ability. If he goes to the big leagues, he’ll make an impact for the major-league club.”

Huntsville continues to lead the Southern League with a team batting average of .298. If the Stars maintain that pace they will eclipse the league record posted by the 1998 Suns, who hit .290. … Suns starting pitchers Jesus Castillo (2.99) and James McDonald (3.01) have the fifth- and sixth-lowest earned run averages among SL pitchers this season. With 106 strikeouts, McDonald is the league’s only pitcher with more than 100. … Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks, who recorded 19 saves in 35 games for the Birmingham Barons in 2005, completed a short rehab stint with the Barons this week. He struck out the side against Montgomery) on 11 pitches in Wednesday’s game and then pitched another perfect inning the following day against the Biscuits.
