Two people died in a head-on collision Thursday morning on Interstate 95 that left three others injured.
Authorities said a 2003 Mazda going south was traveling the northbound lane and collided with a 2008 Hyundai going north about a mile south of International Golf Parkway.
It was unclear why the Mazda was in the wrong lane. It's also unclear when the Mazda got in the wrong lane, said Lt. Bill Leeper of the Florida Highway Patrol.
The driver of the Mazda, Rachel Higgins, 33, of St. Augustine, died at the scene.
The driver of the Hyundai, Scott Baughman, 44, of Lugoff, S.C., was in fair condition, authorities said. A passenger in the car, Debbie Baughman, 45, also died at the scene. Two other passengers in the Hyundai, Lindsey Baughman, 19, and Aaron Baughman, 13, were taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital.
Shands spokesman Chris Turner said Lindsey Baughman was in fair condition and Aaron Baughman was in critical condition.
