Man plucked from river after falling from bridge

A man walking across the Acosta Bridge slipped Thursday afternoon and plummeted 80 feet into the murky waters of the St. Johns River below.

The man, who was not identified, was walking with a companion about 1 p.m. when he accidentally fell.

Sgt. Leonard Propper of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the man fell from the center of the span into the water and managed to cling to a fender around a bridge support until he was rescued by a officers on a police boat.
