Sham marriage sailor who skipped town is back in court

Jul 18, 2008

A sailor who skipped bail and fled to Europe before he could be sentenced for arranging fraudulent marriages at Mayport Naval Station pleaded guilty Friday to failing to appear in court.

Dariusz Stanley Baranski, a Polish national who served in the U.S. Navy, had returned to the United States from Ireland to turn himself in last month, saying he was tired of living in slum-like conditions. Baranski, 27, had previously admitted arranging sham marriages between Mayport sailors and Eastern European women.

Sentencing on both charges is scheduled Oct. 29. Baranski faces up to two years in prison and deportation to Poland.
